Rule 12.  Hand, Flag and Lamp Signals


The following rules for the use of Hand, Flag, and Lamp Signals are taken from the rule book titled Pennsylvania Lines West of Pittsburgh Rules for the Government of the Transportation Department to take effect May 29, 1910.


These rules remain unchanged with the exception of order and sub-rule designation in the rule book titled Consolidated Code of Operating Rules - Revised 1959 to take effect December 1, 1959.

Illustrated Hand Signals
Rule 12a.  Stop.


Swung across track.

Rule 12b.  Proceed.


Raised and lowered vertically.

Rule 12c.  Back.


Swung vertically in a circle at arm's length 
across the track, when the train is standing.

Rule 12d.  Train has parted.


Swung vertically in a circle at arm's length 
across the track, when the train is running.
Rule 12e.  Apply air brakes.


Swung horizontally above the head, 
when the train is standing.

Rule 12f.  Release air brakes.


Held at arms length above the head, 
when the train is standing.

Rule 12g.  Reduce speed.


Held horizontally at arms length, 
when the train is moving.


Addtional Rules
Rule 11.
A fusee on or near the track burning red is an extra signal and indicates stop.

Rule 13.
Any object waved violently by any one on or near the track is a signal to stop.
